WordPress SEO Checklist Before You Launch a New Website

A pre-launch checklist for protecting search visibility during a WordPress build or redesign.

A new design can improve the business while still damaging organic visibility if URLs, metadata or index settings are handled badly. The checks below should happen before the staging site replaces the live website.

Export the current URLs

Crawl the live site and save the URLs, titles, descriptions, headings, canonicals and status codes. Search Console landing-page data can help identify pages that should not disappear quietly.

Keep valuable URLs where possible

A visual redesign does not require a new URL structure. Preserve existing service and location URLs unless there is a clear reason to change them.

Prepare one-to-one redirects

When a URL must change, redirect it to the closest relevant replacement. Avoid broad rules that send unrelated pages to the homepage.

Carry over page titles and descriptions

Improve weak metadata, but do not leave it blank during launch. Every indexable page should have a clear title and a useful description that matches its search intent.

Check headings and visible copy

Use one clear H1 and a logical heading structure. Replace placeholder copy, remove unsupported statistics and testimonials, and confirm every imported link points to the correct destination before the site goes live.

Test forms and tracking

Submit every form, confirm notifications arrive and verify the thank-you page. Test analytics and conversion events in real time.

Remove staging blocks at the right moment

Staging should remain blocked from indexing during the build. Before launch, remove the block on the final site and confirm robots.txt, meta robots and the XML sitemap are correct.

Crawl again after launch

Check redirects, canonicals, internal links and response codes immediately. Monitor Search Console and important landing pages over the following weeks. Learn more about our WordPress web design and technical SEO support.
